Why Are You Hungry Again? Your Appetite Is More Complex Than You Think
The Hormones, Habits and Biology Behind Hunger
Have you ever eaten a meal and found yourself searching for something else an hour later?
Or perhaps you’re fine all morning, but by late afternoon you’re ravenous and reaching for anything available.
We often interpret hunger as a lack of self-control. But appetite is regulated by an incredibly sophisticated communication system involving your brain, gut, hormones, blood sugar and even your sleep.
Understanding why you’re hungry can be much more useful than continually trying to suppress that hunger.
Your Body Has an Appetite-Regulation System
Hormones including ghrelin and leptin help communicate energy availability between the body and brain.
Ghrelin tends to increase hunger, while leptin helps signal that adequate energy has been stored.
Insulin, cortisol and gut-derived hormones also contribute to appetite regulation.
Ideally, these systems work together to tell us when we need energy and when we’ve had enough.
But modern lifestyles can interfere with those signals.
Why You Might Feel Constantly Hungry
Poor sleep can alter appetite regulation. Highly processed foods can provide substantial energy without producing the same satiety as a balanced meal. Blood sugar fluctuations can leave you looking for another quick source of energy.
Stress can change eating behaviour too—some people lose their appetite, while others become much more drawn towards highly palatable foods.
Then there’s meal composition.
A breakfast that is predominantly refined carbohydrate may affect you very differently from one containing adequate protein, healthy fats and fibre.
This is why simply telling someone to “eat less” misses so much of the metabolic picture.
Genetics Can Influence Eating Behaviour
One area I find particularly interesting within nutrigenomics is that we can also look at genetic predispositions relating to eating behaviour.
Your testing may give us insights into factors such as sugar preference, appetite behaviour and motivation, alongside how you metabolise nutrients and respond to exercise.
It doesn’t mean your genes decide what you eat.
It means we can better understand some of the biological tendencies we’re working with.
How the Metabolic Balance Method Helps
Within the Metabolic Balance Method, we’re not trying to spend months fighting hunger.
Instead, we look at why those hunger signals may be occurring.
Do your meals need more protein? Are you experiencing blood sugar fluctuations? Is stress influencing your eating? Are hormones changing your appetite? Is your gut contributing? Does your genetic profile suggest particular metabolic tendencies?
Once we understand the bigger picture, nutrition becomes far more personalised.
